Special Educational Needs

Inclusion is at the heart of Ingleby Greenhow Primary School and we have high expecations for all children in our care. Our highly experienced, knowledgeable and sensitive staff endeavour to create a learning environment where every child feels accepted, understood and valued. Our school is well regarded for its SEND provision and being able to work flexibly to tailor learning experiences to the needs of individuals. Our generous site and large grounds, enable us to take creative and therpeutic approoaches to special educational needs, and our classrooms are set up to be inclusive spaces where barriers to learning are removed, enabling all children to thrive. Relationships are at the centre of our approach to SEND and this includes working closely with parents.

Our Nurture Room provides a calm and gentle space where chidlren can relax and regulate. Our weekly Forest School sesisons are a central part of personal development and help children develop self-esteem and confidence. Our chickens and ducks foster empathy and develop a sense of responsobility.

What are Special Educational Needs?

Special Educational Needs is term that covers a wide range of reasons about why children need something additional and different provided for them to be able to access learning. This could be anything from a physical disability, a diagnosed medical condition, neurodiversity, speech and language issues, cognition and learning difficulties or social, emotional and mental health issues. Special Needs could present in a number of different ways, and there are often complexities when several things present at once. We acknowledge that every child is different, and our approach is to first understand the child, their life, their background and challenges, before then developing a bespoke support plan in partnership with the child and their family. For more information about specific conditions and how to support them, please visit our other SEND pages.
