PSHCE

We follow the Kapow scheme of work for PSHE. We chose this programme because it offers us a thoughtfully sequenced, spiral programme of study for our mixed-age classes, that integrates statutory RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) with emotional literacy, safeguarding, and real-world life skills.

Our programme is designed to be cyclical, so that concepts are revisited year after year from EYFS to Year 6, enabling core knowledge and skills to become embedded over time. The Kapow scheme is aligned with updated Department for Education frameworks, and includes the seamless integration of statutory relationships and health education, alongside puberty and changing bodies.

Core Skills of our PSHE Curriculum

PSHE Curriculum Overviews

Safeguarding is a key focus in PSHE lessons, and we equip children with an age-appropriate understanding of risk. Alongside our taught PSHE curriculum, we also have regular assemblies or workshops on contextual safety, for example farms, water and road safety.

Inclusivity and British values are embedded in our PSHE Kapow programme, however we also use Picture News to explore more global issues to do with identity, equality, difference, and actively promote mutual respect, tolerance, democracy, individual liberty, rule of law, and a welcoming approach to diverse family types. These issues are all further strengthened through our whole class text choices.

Our programmes of personal development and curriculum enrichment are core strengths of our school, and feed into the depth and breadth of our PSHE curriculum. Please visit our Personal Development and Curriculum Enrichment pages for further information about how we provide further opporuntities to develop our pupils unique talents and interests.

Our Curriculum Strands

Our church school ethos and focus on spirituality, provides opportunities for children to reflect, develop a strong sense of self and consider their place within their community and the wider world, whilst our therapeutic approach supports children to understand and express their emotions, develop resilience, regulate themselves and build safe, secure and respectful relationships. The ecological strand of our curriculum further encourages children to understand their responsibility towards the natural world, make ethical choices and recognise how their actions can have an impact beyond themselves. For more information on curriculum strands, please see our curriculum page.
