Geography

Philosophy and Approach

Geography speaks directly to young people’s curiosity, wonder and concern for the world around them. Our geography curriculum is organised to reflect this, and also challenge and meet the needs of our small, mixed-age cohorts. Pupil numbers and classing structures change year-on-year, requiring a rigorous structure of knowledge building, but with enough flexibility to adapt as cohorts change. We ensure children’s learning in geography begins locally, but their learning expands to their understanding of the wider world. Wherever possible and meaningful, the topics are linked to history and other subject areas. Most years, our EYFS are in the same classroom as KS1 and follow the same topics within ‘Understanding of the World’. KS1 work on a two-year rolling programme of disciplinary concepts, knowledge and skills.
